Kickstarter for Paralympian Marin Morrison: Swimming with Brain Cancer
PHOENIX, Arizona. MARIN Morrison was one of the most inspirational stories to come out of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. The teenager, whom doctors discovered had a brain tumor in 2005, struggled to complete three swimming events at the Games after suffering a near fatal stroke just months prior.

James Magnussen Nearly Posts First Unshaved 47-Second 100 Free of 2013
BRISBANE, Australia. THE second pf three sessions of the Australian time trials featured some impressive swims by the Australian world championship team on the road to next month's world championships.

New Backstroke Start Platform Tested in Russia; FINA Might Approve Next Month
MOSCOW, Russia. THE Russian nationals might not have featured many performances of note, save for a national record, but the meet featured the official debut of a new starting platform for backstrokers that promises to reduce the danger of slipping on the touchpad.

World Champion No More; Mads Glaesner Draws Three-Month Doping Ban
COPENHAGEN, Denmark. 2012 world champion Mads Glaesner of Denmark has drawn a three-month doping suspension according to Swimming World correspondent Rokur Jakupsstovu on his blog Swimmer's Daily.

U.S. National Championships Predictions, Part One
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. JUST days remain until the beginning of the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. Swimming fans have eagerly anticipated this week since the conclusion of swimming at last summer's Olympics. Now, finally, the U.S. will pick the World Championship team. Plenty of big names remain from the London team, but plenty of events have vacancies that will force young, new faces to step to the forefront. Who steps up in Indy will help decide who leads the way for the U.S. this Olympiad.

U.S. National Championships Predictions, Part Two
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. THE third and fourth days of the U.S. National Championships will bring important races for Olympians such as Jessica Hardy and younger swimmers attempting to make their mark, such as Kevin Cordes. Both will compete in the 50 and 100 breast in Indianapolis, and both enter as favorites in both events. Hardy holds the world record in both events on the women's side, but she didn't qualify to swim the 100 breast in the Olympics last year. Now, with a renewed focus on breaststroke, she will battle Breeja Larson for supremacy in these races.

U.S. National Championships Predictions, Part Three
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. HAVING already made my picks for the first four days of swimming in Indianapolis - here and here - only six more events remain to finish up the meet on Saturday. Events on the final day include the women's and men's 200 IM, women's and men's 50 free, and the non-Olympic distance races, the women's 800 and men's 1500 free.

Keep Your Eyes On These Four At USA Swimming Nationals
PHOENIX, Arizona. THE best thing about the year after the Olympics is trying to figure out who will lead the next generation of swimming stars to the next Olympiad. If the United States is to remain at the top of the medal standings in the years leading up to Rio de Janeiro, the next wave of elite swimmers need to cement their status now as ones to watch, to give them time to get used to the spotlight before 2016.

USOC Courting Cities to Bid for 2024 Olympic Hosting Duties
PHOENIX, Arizona. THE United States Olympic Committee is in the very early stages of considering which city would be the best candidate to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, and is currently considering about 10 cities that have host potential.

Stanford Leads List of Schools With Most Aquatic Sports Olympic Medalists
ORLANDO, Florida. THIRTY-NINE American universities were named today as winners of the U.S. Olympic Achievement Award, honoring schools with current student-athletes who won Olympic medals last year, and/or coaches that led medal-winning teams. Among those schools, 18 had coaches and/or athletes with Olympic ties in aquatic sports.

FORD Masters Quartet Break World, National Relay Records in Tucson
TUCSON, Arizona. WHILE several elite younger swimmers were posting impressive times last weekend at the long course meters Southwest Classic on the campus of the University of Arizona, four Masters swimmers were breaking relay records.

Serbia Defeats Hungary in Finals of World League Water Polo
CHELYABINSK, Russia. FOR the seventh time, Serbia won the World League Super Final and a check for $100,000. The team, which twice won as Serbia-Montenegro, defeated Hungary in the final match for the honor. Montenegro--the other half of the former joint country--defeated the American squad for third place.

Fifteen Divers On USA World Championship Roster
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. THREE of the American divers who won Olympic medals last summer in London look to repeat or improve on their Olympic performances this summer at the FINA world championships in Barcelona.

USA Synchro Honors Myrna Hagedorn With Distinguished Service Award
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. USA Synchro recently recognized the late Myrna Hagedorn with the Lillian MacKellar Distinguished Service Award.

In My Mind: Flowers Sea Swim is a Gem in the Swimming Crown
When it comes to creating an open water race, you could only dream about a package that includes magnificent white sand, boundlessly clear, blue water, superb weather, friendly faces everywhere you turn, and an organizational team so efficient their talents rival that of any event, anywhere. For the Flowers Sea Swim, this dream is a reality, and their annual event--having just completed its 21st year--is, like a fine wine, only getting better with age. If you haven't heard of it--or participated in it--you're missing out on a lifetime experience.

Science of Performance: Plyometrics and Its Effect on Swimming Performance
SANTA CLARA, California. PLYOMETRICS start with children doing hopscotch with their friends on the playground. (Do kids still have recess?) However, this seemingly innocuous form of exercise requires specific instruction and progression for safe utilization.

Freestyle Rhythm

[Effortless Swimming] Freestyle Rhythm

Just like in dancing it's rhythm that makes everything come together in the pool.

You don't need to be a good dancer to swim well though (or I'd be in trouble)! In today's video we cover the relationship between faster swimming and your rhythm.
  1. How To Develop Rhythm in Freestyle - This week we look at 'dead spots' in your stroke and my three favourite ways to avoid them (and develop rhythm). This was prompted by one of our subscribers who sent in a video of their stroke. He asked what he could do increase his speed, my suggestions are in this video.
    What the video

  2. What Should Our New Logo Be? (Your help needed) - I'm tossing up between two new logos for Effortless Swimming - I can't decide which one to choose. If you have 20 seconds to spare I'd love to hear your thoughts over on our Facebook page where I've posted them.
    Help me choose here
Swim well, swim fast!

Regards,

Brenton Ford
